Chapter Fourteen

“Lady Strathfulton,” Lady Baritone exclaimed as Maeve stood on the drive looking at the people laid out like pieces on a chessboard. “Or may I call you Maeve? It would be an honour to be on first-name terms.”

“Eh…” This was not the Lady Baritone Maeve had come to know.

“My name is Mary, by the way.”

“Mary, yes, of course. Mary.”

“Maeve, I must apologise first of all for being so grumpy over these last few days. I was somewhat distracted by… well, does it matter now? I think not. I want to make amends and start doing so by welcoming you to Baritone Abbey.”

“Mary, I think the best welcome would be to try and find…”

“Can I introduce you to Mr Charles Maple? He has an estate next door and has been most helpful in various aspects over the years.”

Maeve moved into polite mode despite the interruption by the dowager countess, an interruption that she considered quite possibly to be deliberate. After all, a leopard changing all its spots overnight seemed a little too much to hope for, somewhat disconcerting too. There had to be something of the old brittle dowager countess remaining. She looked at the old lady carefully, noting the tension in her features.

She had imagined the dowager countess to be grumpy because it was in her character to be so, forged by a hundred aches and pains that advancing years had given her.

Now, it seemed, there was something else at play.
